Fatal Car Crashes Spike
The number of deadly car crashes in this country hit a 20-year record in early 2022, a spike attributed to risky driving exacerbated during the pandemic.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 9,500 were killed on the road in the first three months of 2022 – the highest number of first-quarter traffic deaths since 2002.
Drivers Take Risks
A survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety revealed that higher-risk drivers were more likely to take to the highways during the pandemic – engaging in questionable behaviors such as reading text messages, speeding, running red lights, aggressively changing lanes, not wearing seat belts or driving after having consumed alcohol or cannabis.
On a more positive note, following two years of dramatic increase, the traffic fatality numbers have just started to level off, with a slight decline in the third quarter of 2022.
This gradual decline follows quarter after quarter of increases in fatalities which began in 2020.
In any event, the high rate of road deaths in the U.S. is contrary to global trends. Most experts believe that with safer roads, safer vehicles, and stronger traffic laws now in existence, the trend should be fewer traffic accidents and deaths – not more.
Stay Safe Through Simple Measures
According to the AAA, the best way to stay safe and prevent accidents is to follow to some simple driving measures:
- Obey Speed Limits
- Drive Sober
- Stow away the smartphone
- Buckle up
- Remain Calm
