San Diego-Rideshare Accident-1536x864

App-based rideshare services are an increasingly popular mode of transportation in San Diego amongst workers, students, residents, and tourists. Passengers have access to convenient transportation with one simple click. Unfortunately, the soaring popularity of services such as Uber or Lyft has also generated a surge of rideshare accidents, many of them serious. The expansion of ridesharing services has led to increased traffic congestion and a decline in public transportation usage, resulting in traffic accidents, injuries and deaths.

Uber and Lyft are now required by California law to carry $1 million in coverage for property damage, injury, and death when an accident is caused by one of their drivers. In most cases, you will have to deal with an insurance company to receive the compensation you need in the aftermath of an accident. Claims can be complicated, and insurers, with their teams of accident personnel and legal staff, generally do everything possible to limit your payout. For an experienced rideshare accident lawyer, contact our firm today.

Rideshare Accidents in San Diego and the U.S.

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have made 11 billion trips in the U.S.  since both were introduced in 2010.

While ridesharing services are credited with keeping impaired drivers off the road and offering new levels of convenience, they are also associated with a higher level of traffic deaths. According to a study from the University of Chicago, since the arrival of ride sharing there has been a 3 percent annual spike in fatal accidents – about 987 deaths per day – especially in big cities like San Diego.  Researchers calculated this figure by examining traffic volume, preferred modes of transportation, and the number of car accidents in the eight financial quarters before and after Ube and Lyft’s rollout dates. The study revealed that:

  • The increasing number of rideshare vehicles on the road translates into 1,000 daily car accidents.
  • Uber vehicles were involved in 91 fatal crashes – causing 101 deaths – between 2019 and 2020
  • Accidents at drop-off and pick-up locations are also on the rise
  • Increased use of ridesharing apps correlates directly with a rise in the number of cars on the road, as well as an increase in injuries, accidents, and fatalities involving all kinds of travelers: drivers, cyclists, passengers, and pedestrians

Causes of Rideshare Accidents

Rideshare drivers, like other drivers, make mistakes and succumb to distractions that lead to accidents. Rideshare drivers face heightened risks because they often work long shifts and drive late at night, during times when their bodies’ natural sleep cycle makes them feel excessively fatigued.

Driving while fatigued produces similar effects as driving while alcohol impaired, degrading the driver’s reaction time, awareness of hazards, and ability to maintain control. Drowsy drivers are three times more likely to be involved in an accident than those who are well-rested, which is why fatigued driving results in more than 328,000 accidents and around 5,000 fatalities in the United States each year.

Fatigue is not the only contributor to San Diego rideshare accidents, however. Other common causes of these crashes include:

  • Lack of familiarity with streets and traffic patterns.
  • Aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, red light running, or tailgating.
  • Distractions such as cell phone use, including texting, talking, using an app, or browsing social media.
  • Adjusting the stereo, temperature, or other vehicle controls.
  • Inclement weather conditions, including poor visibility or slick roadways.
  • Lack of vehicle maintenance that makes rideshare vehicle unsafe.
  • Impairment from alcohol use, or from taking prescription, illicit, or over-the-counter medications.
  • Accidents with other drivers, both rideshare and civilian
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs
  • Texting while driving or engaging in other distracting behavior
  • Speeding
  • Running red lights and stop signs
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Simply not paying attention
  • and violating other traffic laws
