Teen Driving Safety

Teen Driving Safety

It’s a day many parents dread: watching their teen drive off alone for the first time.  And there is good reason for concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. About 2,800 teens 13–19 years of age lost their lives in car crashes in 2020 – that’s a stunning eight teens a day who die in auto accidents. The data shows that driver inexperience is a leading contributor to crashes and injuries for teen motorists, and crash risk is especially high during the first few months after teens obtain their licenses.

Risky behaviors – such as drinking and driving, texting on the road, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt – also dramatically increase the risk of deaths and injuries. The good news?  Many crashes involving teen drivers are preventable. And parents can make a dramatic difference in helping teens drive safely by being good role models and teaching their children to make good decisions behind the wheel – there are plenty resources which provide important input. As an example, the CDC’s Parents are the Key campaign offers valuable information to help parents keep their children safe when driving.

Additionally, the Automobile Association of America offers Pointers for Parents – providing critical information on how parents can play an invaluable role in a child’s learning-to-drive process – from checking into state licensing processes to supervising practicing driving.

AAA even has an online course for parents of teens who are learning to drive – the StartSmart Online Parent Session, a two-hour webinar which explains the licensing process and parents’ role.
