It’s a day many parents dread: watching their teen drive off alone for the first time. And there is good reason for concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. About 2,800 teens 13–19 years of age lost their lives in car crashes in 2020 – that’s a stunning eight teens a day who die in auto accidents. The data shows that driver inexperience is a leading contributor to crashes and injuries for teen motorists, and crash risk is especially high during the first few months after teens obtain their licenses.
Risky behaviors – such as drinking and driving, texting on the road, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt – also dramatically increase the risk of deaths and injuries. The good news? Many crashes involving teen drivers are preventable.
